Understanding camera settings to take accurate photographs.

Aperture

Aperture controls depth of field and how much light is let in. It is measured in f-stops. When there’s a larger f-stop like f/2.8 there is a wider lens, shallow depth of field and the image is brighter. When there is a f-stop like f/16 the lens is narrow and so is the depth of field as well as the image being darker.

Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed is controlling time. The shutter speed tells the camera how long to stay open, this measures how much light hits the sensor. A high shutter speed 1/30 will be slower, more blurred but will have more light. The lower shutter speeds like 1/500 will have a freeze frame effect, shutter faster, but image will be darker.

ISO

ISO is what can control how bright and dark the image is as well as how much sensitivity and noise there is. When there is a high ISO the image will be brighter but it will have more noise and a higher sensitivity. And when the ISO is low the image will be darker but will have less noise and less sensitivity. The sensitivity and noise of the image is what controls how grainy the image will be.

Depth of field

Depth of field is when a the camera is focused on one thing primarily. The focus point can be closer to the camera which then makes the object/model more focused then the further away background which appears more blurred out, this is narrow depth of field. Large depth of field makes the objects that are closer more blurred and the focus point which is further and the background more clear.

Dynamic Range

Dynamic Range is the difference between the darkest and lightest points in the photograph. It is the range that the camera can handle. It is measured by the f-stops. How much light is let into the camera. It can enhance or lose detail in pictures.
